Shoot Out @ Super Bowl Regatta Shoot Out
We had an exciting battle this past weekend at the annual Super Bowl Regatta held at SMWYC. Seven lido teams showed up to Marina Del Rey for the first shoot out of lido racing for the new year. With the light air and large ebbing tide, the race venue was a real challenge for all. Such conditions really tested your patience, especially since most of us hadn’t raced our lido’s in months and were a bit rusty out on the race course.
Although it was a small fleet, the racing was a true battle with many lead changes. In fact, four different teams won a race! When the dust had settled, nobody was really sure who had won. At one point, three different teams were winning the regatta! Who said lido racing wasn’t exciting!?
Race one saw Kevin and Helen take an early lead that they maintained. Race two saw Stu finish first. Race three saw Tyler Webb and Nikhil do a horizon job on the fleet. Race four and five saw the wind become a bit more consistent and a bit more breezier than the first three races. Mark and Lorna used the consistent breeze to their advantage and were able to come out with two bullets. Point wise, those two bullets pushed Mark and Lorna to the lead over longtime lido sailor Stu.
Although it was a light turn out for the lido fleet and wind wise, the day was still full of challenges out on the race course and a lot of teams found themselves in the lead at one point or another. Plus, our entry fee went to a good cause of fundraising the youth sailors of Santa Monica bay.
Up next for the Lido fleet in So. Cal will be Midwinters at ABYC, Saturday, February15th.
Editors comments: Steve Potter & team have done a fantastic job building this regatta to over 100 boats. Everyone looks forward to this event after a long holiday hiatus. Also, take advantage of a one day Midwinters at ABYC, get yard work done on Sunday!
