2020 SCYA Lido 14 Midwinters

Battle at Lido Midwinters!

We had a full fledged battle at the Midwinters this past weekend! Thirteen teams showed up to Alamitos Bay to see who was the top dog. Both the A and B fleet saw close action and the winner of both divisions wasn’t clear until everybody was back at the club! That’s what Lido racing is all about!

The A fleet saw very tight racing throughout the day. Early in the races, we saw breeze of about 5 knots with many velocity shifts both upwind and downwind. As the day progressed, we started to see more geographical shifts come into play as the wind picked up to around ten knots. But nobody predicted the large left hand windshift up the first beat of race four that turned the fleet inside out! Nobody except maybe Tyler Webb/Luaren Hopson who easily won that race! The bay threw everything at the lido fleet this past weekend!

Although Mark/Adam “won” the event with a 3,2,1,7,2, it was Bruce/Dini that were the ones to beat this past weekend! They were fast off the line and had great speed and height upwind. Unfortunately, they had three great races and two bad ones that pushed them to third. Coming in second with a 2, 4, 7, 6, 2, 1 was John Gresham/Chris May. Coming in fourth was Bob Little/Paul Anctil with a 4,3,3,3,6,7. Big congrats to junior sailors Nikhil Stewart/Diego! This was their first time out in their newly bought Lido! It’s so good to see juniors getting involved in our old school Lido 14’s!

The B fleet saw Will Vrooman and Dale Gronewold duking it out in a match race of sorts that came down to the very last race! Will ended up winning the tie breaker with Dale  in second, and Alex Papavasiliou and son from Ventura in third.

The results don’t show it, but the racing was really top notch this past weekend! Martin did a fantastic job running the races. We mainly had double W/L courses with gate marks for leeward marks. The racing was action packed all the way to the finish line with many people passing and getting passed on every beat! No lead was too large this past weekend and the fleets were deep with talented sailors!

Up next for the Lido fleet will be the EE Manning Regatta in a few short weeks. Then is another regatta in Oceanside on 3/8.  After that is the Harry Wood Regatta in Newport Beach!

Editorial Comments...  Special thanks to Alex and Leon Papavasiliou for making the trek from Ventura Sailing Club to join us!  It's really great to see people from other areas mixing it up, especially when they bring a junior!-jrj
