The Legend of Harry Wood

Harry Wood was a lifelong lifeguard with the city of Long Beach starting in the 1940s; he was inducted into the Long Beach Lifeguard Hall of Fame in 1996.  He was also an equally long-time dinghy sailor and, in the Lido 14 Class, he was a legend – he won the Class Championships 3 times (1962, 1965, 1967) amongst countless other titles and victories.

In 1978, Harry was very ill and his Lido 14 friends in Newport Beach decided that it was appropriate to hold a regatta in his honor.  Harry supported this event by not only participating but by donating perpetual trophies to the cause - in some cases, trophies that he had won at past events.  In a sense, this was a "win the trophy back" from Harry event.  With a great sigh of relief, Harry healed from his illness and lived a good life for many more years - which meant that the regatta was in his name, rather than the Harry Wood Memorial that it is known by today.

The 42nd running of this event is being held at Balboa Yacht Club on March 15th.  Both BYC and and Lido 14 Fleet 1 (Newport Beach) encourage all Lido 14 Class members to come and celebrate the spirit of Harry by racing in this event.

Registration for the regatta is now open. Visit the event website to register.
